Visiting The Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul)

I expected to stand in the usual line. To wait, even as the time on my ticket passed by.

But not this day, I showed up at the blue house bright and early with only a few people ahead of me, and only one line instead of the customary two.

Museo Frida Kahlo is the second most visited museum in Mexico City (the number one visited is the Archeology Museum but it’s closed during the pandemic so that puts the Kahlo Museum, commonly known as Casa Azul - Blue House - as the number one stunner.

And a stunner it is.

The striking blue, the rusty red, the glowing green garden, it’s definitely a must-see.

And it’s open now. Like most venues in Mexico City, they have put a ton of measures in place to keep their guests and staff safe.

How To Buy Tickets to the Frida Kahlo Museum

Tickets are timed (each ticket has a 30-minute arrival window - if you’re late, you won’t get in) and you have to buy a ticket online to get in. The museum used to let you buy tickets on-site but that is no longer an option. If you show up without a ticket you have to buy one online while you are there.

The entrance fee (in pesos) is:

On Weekdays:

$ 230.00 General admission (a little over $10 USD)
$ 100.00 Mexican citizens with an official ID
$ 45.00 Teachers and students with valid ID
$ 20.00 Elementary and high school students (about $1 USD)
$ 20.00 Seniors (65+)

On Weekends:

$ 270.00  General admission
$ 130.00 Mexican citizens with an official ID
$ 50.00 Teachers and students with valid ID
$ 25.00 Elementary and high school students
$ 25.00 Seniors (65+)

If you want to take pictures inside the museum you need a photo pass that you can purchase for 30 pesos per person (less than $2 USD). With that pass you can also take video inside the gardens, but not in the museum buildings.

How To Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum

Casa Azul is located in Coyoacan, just south of Mexico City at Londres 247, Colonia del Carmen, Delegación Coyoacán, CP 04100, Ciudad de México, México. Their phone number is: +52 (55) 5658 5778.

To get to The Blue House you should take an Uber or a taxi.

Museo Frida Kahlo has two main buildings; the house, and an exhibition building.

You can get through the entire museum in about two hours, but add some more time if you want to move leisurely through the gardens or the gift shop.

There is no coat check or bag check at the museum, so don’t bring your luggage or large bags with you.

Is the Frida Kahlo Museum worth visiting?

I’ve visited Casa Azul four times, so I might not be completely unbiased, but I love it there, and I will visit any chance I can get. Yes, it is totally worth the money and the time of the visit. The displays are detailed, informative, and educational. It’s great for kids and adults.

Going to Mexico City in the summer? Here’s what you need to pack.

Covid Precautions taken By Frida Kahlo Museum

You have to get your temperature taken and use hand sanitizer before entering Museo Frida Kahlo. They are strict about the walking paths you can take throughout the buildings and they only allow a certain number of people into each room at a time.

I actually preferred this visit to my three prior visits. Wait times were shorter, it was more orderly, and you weren’t crowded in any of the rooms. There aren’t many upsides to Covid-19, but that is a small one.

Don’t miss my favorite places to stay in Mexico City.

Special Exhibits

Because we visited at the end of October, there was a beautifully styled Day of the Dead exhibit at the exit of the house. It was very detailed and…fancy. It was completely different from the one at Anuahacalli (The Diego Rivera Museum). The display at Casa Azul was perfectly designed and very modern.

On the back side of the Casa Azul property, there is an exhibit of Frida’s clothing.

See my Instagram story highlights and the photos below for more details of this display.

After Frida Kahlo Museum go to Xochimilco and/or Anahuacalli.

After visiting Casa Azul, take a short walk to the center of Coyoacan and get lunch. There are a number of restaurants a few blocks away from the Frida Kahlo museum in Coyocan by Parque Centenario (with the famous coyote fountain). I’ve eaten at both La Cerveceria de Barrio (a chain) and Antiguo Palacio De Coyoacan and they were both tasty.

If you have more adventure in you, grab your food (and drink) to go, head down to Xochimilco and have a party on the canals.

Kahlo museum ticket gets you into Museo Diego Rivera - Anahuacalli. You can use your Anahuacalli ticket for one year after the purchase of a Museo Kahlo ticket.

Visiting both Xochimilco and Anahuacalli after (or before) going to Casa Azul is a great idea because of how far south from Mexico City you have to go to get to them. It makes the most sense to get these three knocked out in one day if you can.

And that’s how to spend an amazing day in Coyoacan and how to maximize your time is the Frida Kahlo Museum.

I hope you go and have an amazing experience as I did. For more info about what to do in Mexico City, check out this blog post.
